Genus Aelurillus described by Bohdanowicz and Proszynski, 1987

Systematic studies on East Palaearctic Salticidae (Araneae), IV. Salticidae of Japan

Genus Aelurillus Simon 1884
The genus presents some nomenclatorical problems. Harm(1997) proposed to synonymize its name with Phlegra Simon, 1876 because of apparent resemblance of males (but not females) of the three Central European species. The proposal, however, is less convicing in respect to about 80 nominal species of both genera occuring in Africa, Asia and Europe. We delay therefore acceptation of it until both whole genera will be revised. (Bohd. and Prosz.,1987)

   Species Aelurilus festivus (C.L.Koch,1834)

Ae.festivus is a species easily recognizable by external appearance of epigyne (Prosznski 1971:235,ff.6-7, Harm 1977:69-72,ff.11-12). Palpal organ is less characteristic and can easily mistaken with other Aelurillus species. Its main recognition characters are set of two tibial apophyses, the ventral being broad and lower, heavily sclerotized and dark. The dorsal is higher, finger-like, light coloured and slightly inclined ventralwards (Prosznski 1971:234,ff.2-5).

Ae.festivus has Palaearctic distribution (Prosznski 1976,map 1). Schenkel(1963) has described from China males of two species very similar to Ae.festivus, which Wesolowsla(1981a) redescribes as Phlegra potanini Schenkel, 1963. Further characters of those species as well as unknown female are described from Mongolia by Proszynski(1982). The Japanese specimens are apparently true Ae.festivus.

COMMENT by IKEDA
Logunov and Heciak (1996) stand a new genus Asianellus of the subfamily Aelurillinae.
A provisional key for separating the three genera is given as follows:
   1. Metatarsi I,II without pro- and retrolateral spinnes; leg IV always longer thsn leg III;
    ratio leg IV/leg III more than 1.25...............Phlegra
   -  Metatarsi I, II with both pro- and retrolateral spines (their pattern 1-1ap.);
     ratio leg IV /leg III less than 1.25...............2

   2. Anterior part of eye field covered with numerous short erect spines (= rod hairs);
     embolus spiralled, widened at apex; spermathecae tube-chambered ...............Asianellus
   - Anterior part of eye field without spines, covered with hairs only (if rod hairs present,
     the embolic membrane always present); male palpal femora often with rounded convexity
     (bump-like) and covered with long hairs; spermathecae compact.....................Aelurillus
