Genus Plexippoides described by Bohdanowicz and Proszynski, 1987

The genus established originally by indication of type species in a publication considered at that time provosional. The redescription of the genus with description of new species is given by Proszynski (1984b). The genus contains 9 species (including three in Japan, two in China and one in Korea) and its type species is Yllenus atarmuehlneri Rower, 1955 from Iran (male only, the female described under the same name is apparently not conspecific and presumably also not congeneric). P.starmuehlneri was selected as type species because it was the easiest obtainable species at the time. It has also two closely related species in Asia Minor and Saudi Arabia. It appears now that it is rather specialized and not the closest relative of the East Asiatic species, forming the bulk of the genus. Recent research by Zabka (1985) yielded another two related species in Burma and Java, originally included into Viciria Thorell, 1877 and now reclassified into restored genus Epeus Peckham, 1885 (Proszynski 1984b). The males do resemble Plexippoides while females differ distinctly in structure of epigyne - which may be, however, extreme specialization. The problem of relationship of both groups of species and their possible congeneric status calls for further research. The genus Plexippoides can be best recognized by peculiar palpal organ in males, with flattened cymbium, expanded laterally and much broader than bulbus, usually rounded. Tibial apophysis usually extends sidewards, is thin, hook like and touches or articulates with similar hook like process (or in some species drawn angle) of the cymbium. Embolus long, in studied species goes round the bulbus. There is a flap like protuberance on the bulbus, opposite to embolus. Epigyne difficult to describe and draw, consisits usually of a sclerotized surface anteriorly elevated, with indistinct openings on its slope. The fragments of complicated inner coils are usually visible through the sclerotized wall of epigyne, these form a knot of several loops and then pass into sclerotized vesicles of different size. Relatively large spider resembling in general proportions and shape rather Lycosidae. Distinct colour pattern. Cephalothorax brown with eye field goldish. White spots: large anteriorly, smaller posteriorly on eye field, the latter extended on thorax by median diamond shaped stretching from fovea to thoracal posterior margin. Upper part of thorax brown, lower dark brown with broad band above ventral margin covered with white setae. The colour pattern is mainly due to setae. Cephalothorax moderately long and proportionally high, with thorax gently sloping from just the foveal area, without any flat part. Abdomen white with brown median streak, with two pairs of white spots, constricted in front of spinnerets (fig.233). Legs brown with central areas of segnments yellowish, paler areas occur also on femora I-IV. Eyes I pearl white surrounded with white setae with exception for setae dorsal to eyes median - which are brownish. Clypeus yellowish fawn with a chevron consisting of two rows of longer setae from eyes I lateral to the point between cheliceral bases. Chelicerae brown. Pedipalps: cymbium brown, patella whitish yellow, tibia yellowish. Palpal organ see figs.235-238. Maxillary plates and labium brown, white tipped. Chelicerae with single retrolateral tooth - fig.234. Sternum yellowish grey. Coxae yellowish, anterior slightly darker. Venter brownish grey.

Material. 1 male (+1 juv. of uncertain species) - Japan, Nagano Pref., leg.T.Yaginuma; 1 male - Hasarius doenitzi Karsch, Kyoto Pref., 11.V.1960, leg.det.T.Yaginuma - coll.J.Proszynski; 1 female - Hasarius doenitzi Karsch, Japan, Osaka Pref.[widely distributed and common], 26.V.1968, leg.det.T.Yaginuma - coll.J.Proszynski.
Male smaller than in previous species (Plexippoides annulipedis), much paler in general appearance with light fawnish thorax, same legs and whitish median streak, segmented posteriorly, on abdomen. Palpal organ typical. Eye feild dark brown, eyes surrounding black. Thorax fawnish with light median streak and supramarginal long area, near which end darker brown lines radiating from fovea. Ventral edge brown. Abdomen with three streaks: median whitish, posteriorly diagonally segmented and two following laterally grey with whitish dots - four diagonal greyish white dotted lines run from the latter sidewards over the whitish background. Spinnerets yellowish, medially suffused grey. Legs fawnish yellow with anterior surfaces of legs I-II darkened to brown. Ventral appearance generally whitish yellow except of abdomen, whose central area behind epigastric furrow is dirty grey, laterally pale greyish olive with broken and irregular thin grey lines. Frontal aspect generally fawnish yellow, with eyes surrounding black. Palpal organ typical for the genus (figs.239-241), however, the cymbium protuberance articulating with tibial apophysis is not hook like but forms, wide flattened extension of the cymbium wall.
Female. Eye field brown with dark brown margins, and eyes surrounded black, the marginal area lighter - makes a light brown ring, whitish around central brown spot. Thorax with light yellow median streak from fovea and eye field border to hind margin. It is followed along abdomen by whitish streak. Ventral edges of carapace dark, above them broad light yellowish marginal streak. Thorax between median and marginal streaks brownish or fawnish with darker brown streaks radiating from fovea. Clypeus yellowish covered with with white setae, long in its middle. Abdomen dorsally with whitish lancet shaped streak, a small triangular darker spot in front of spinnerets. The median streak bordered by grey lines which become gradually less dense sidewards and drive into indistinct diagonal lines merging with light lateral surfaces. Abdomen ventrally whitish with three median grey lines fusing anteriorly and posterioly. Legs fawnish with femora paler, and darker brown spines which appear nemerous and long. Epigyne in aform of a single depressed shallow bowl with anteriorly located conical protuberance and slit like copulatory openings. The canals make sclerotized coils, however, less complicated than in P.regius Wesolowska, 1981 from North Korea. The details shown on figs.242-245.
